Erich was released early on grounds of “good behavior”, and his criminal record was expunged eventually. His opponents, with the zealous prosecutor in the lead – the man had long since embarked on a personal vendetta against Erich – were still determined to destroy the career of the troublesome upstart. Yet exactly the opposite happened: his release from prison turned into a public spectacle. His wife and young daughter, his friends, his publisher, the press – they all came to celebrate Erich von Daeniken's return.
And what a come-back it was! His popularity soon reached an all-time high. There were new expeditions - some of them adventurous enough to rival the plot of an Indiana Jones-film - resulting in new findings and subsequent books, 30 of which have been published to date. His books have been translated into 32 languages, selling well over 60 million copies worldwide.
This makes Erich von Daeniken the most successful non-fiction writer of all time.
His films, too, constantly earn high ratings in Europe as well as verseas. Especially “Chariots of the Gods – the Mysteries Continue”, a U.S./German co-produced documentary series, telecast by ABC, The Discovery Channel and RTL, achieved unprecedented ratings for this genre.
THE FILM
Basing their work on the 2004 book “Mr. Daeniken, wie haben Sie das vollbracht?” (“Mr. Daeniken, How did you bring it off?”) by Jürgen Mai, the New York writing team of Gary Gasgarth and Beverly Shapiro wrote the screenplay.
